Believe QF is actively discouraging staff travel in peak periods, ie school holidays. Bad luck if you have school age kids. With late upgrade opportunities for commercial passengers, the chances of upgrades for staff passengers on Qantas international services has significantly decreased.

I used Qantas Staff Travel on QF1 to London 17 November and back on QF2 on 25 November. All went smoothly except for the upgrade process out of Darwin in both directions.
